On 10/2/2021 at approximately 11:38 a.m., the on call sewer employee was notified of a sewer complaint in the Euchee Creek subdivision. Upon arrival, the employee made contact with the homeowner who showed her to a manhole behind the home, which was actively overflowing. On call employees from the Streets and Sanitation as well as the Sewer Department worked together with Columbia County Sewer employees to clear the blocked sewer line, restore flow, and stop the overflow. Roots had grown through the manhole, blocking the flow of sewer through the pipe. Once the blockage was cleared and the site assessed, it was determined that sewer ran into a tributary of Euchee Creek. At this point, at approximately 3:10pm, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) was notified of the spill. Water samples were collected from the affected stream both upstream and downstream of the spill. Monitoring of this stream will continue throughout the next 12 months and be reported to the EPD. Signs have been posted in vicinity of the spill and hydrated lime has been applied to areas of land contaminated by the spill. If you plan to enjoy our Euchee Creek Trails, please use caution to stay out of the water and keep pets out of the water during this time. If you live in the Euchee Creek subdivision, please avoid the area where signs are posted and stay out of the Euchee Creek tributary during this time.
